Huntingdon, Elizabeth Bay

Huntingdon, Elizabeth BayThis is another one of those red brick Art Deco apartment blocks in Sydney. This is Huntingdon in Elizabeth Bay and I am not sure about the awning over the entrance bearing the block's name. I presume it is a later addition and I suppose it is a deco font but seems a bit cliched to me.

However, I do like the brickwork. Again a common feature of Sydney, and in fact Australian, Art Deco.

The Wroxton, Elizabeth Bay

The Wroxton, Elizabeth Bay

The is the Wroxton in Elizabeth Bay, Sydney. I like the combination of the horizontal bands of the balconies and the vertical columns of windows on either side. It is also really nice to see that none of the balconies have been enclosed which is too often the case.

Tara, Elizabeth Bay

Tara, Elizabeth BayElizabeth Bay and Potts Point are wonderful areas of Sydney to just wonder around taking in the architecture.

This apartment building in Greenknowe Avenue, Elizabeth Bay is called Tara.

It is another Sydney building from the 1930s that uses bricks to apply much of the decoration. While not as elaborate as Wychbury the decorative brickwork on Tara, when seen when seen in close-up, is very spectacular.

Adereham Hall, Elizabeth Bay

Adereham Hall, Elizabeth BayThe glorious building is in Elizabeth Sydney. It is Adereham Hall dating from 1934 and designed by Gordon McKinnon & Sons.

Often a building will have one sunburst motif, front and centre, on the facade but Adereham Hall has a wonderful geometric Aztec or Mayan 'hieroglyph' instead and sunbursts just about everywhere else. At the top of each column and, in a different style, under each of the three top-floor windows. The later style sunburst is then repeated above the main entrance.

It makes another appearance under each of the two small balconies half-way up the building.

Elizabeth Bay and Potts Point are wonderful areas of Sydney to explore and admire Art Deco buildings, many of which are included on this walking tour of the area.

Marlborough Hall, Elizabeth Bay

Marlborough Hall, Elizabeth Bay

Marlborough Hall (1938) in Elizabeth Bay, Sydney was designed by architect Emil Sodersten.

This asymetrical block of flats has a stepped roofline above the entrance with a flagpole at the highest point and, I suppose, a small rounded porch-like structure.

I think it is too high to be an actual porch and besides there is a matching porch at street level.

I like the feature of the triangle shaped amber coloured glass windows running the height of the building between the two porches.
