The Rutland, Darlinghurst

I like the shape of the decoration on the roofline of The Rutland, an apartment block in Sydney's Darlingurst area. I also like the incised lines on the balconies but why are they such a dull colour?

I don't know what is more impressive about the 225 Oxford St half of Oxford Art Supplies. The amazing geometric pattern on the facade or the amazing collection of air conditioners on top of the verandah.

And I don't know what is less impressive. The appalling remodelled shopfront at street level or the appalling collection of air conditioners on top of the verandah.

I do know that the business which started as a hardware store in 1964 run by Alf and Bessie Altshuler morphed into an art store in the 1970's under their son David and their grandson, Marc, is associated with the store today. That, at least, is a good thing.

Royal Court, Darlinghurst

The Royal Court apartments are tucked away in Crown Street, Darlinghurst and through necessity it is an irregular shaped building curving with the bend in the street running alongside the block.

But in true Art Deco style Royal Court features a wonderful entrance and a stepped window above the doorway. Above that is an older style window but a scalloped panel below the sill interesected with three vertical bars provides the deco elements.

At the roofline, a series of chevrons and arcs tops the decoration.

G A Zink & Sons, Darlinghurst

Established in 1895, G A Zink & Sons Tailors moved to their current premises at 56 Oxford St in 1911. The second and three storey facade are certainly from this time but at some point later, the ground floor shopfront was remodelled in Art Deco style.

And what a beautiful shopfront. Shiny black and silver with olive green strips along the tops of the windows and red highlight lines on the G A Zink lettering.

The terrazzo entrance bears a nice combination of pink and cream squares with three green lines leading to the doorway and styised Zink & Sons lettering.
